Joyful Noise began in 2001 at
University School of Nashville. Randy Hoover-Dempsey, a mandolin-playing
fifth grade teacher who loves to sing old gospel songs, started the group.
One of his students, Emily Williamson, told him her daddy played Dobro,
which is how George Williamson joined. Judy Yeaworth, another teacher,
played bass, while her husband John sang and played guitar. With addition
players on harmonica, banjo and guitar, the group played at Davis-Kidd
bookstore and several churches. Later Randy brought his mandolin to Sunday School class at St. Bartholomew’s church, where he met Bryan Cumming (guitar), Peter Pent (banjo), Janelle Waggener (vocals), and Roy Goin (bass). In spring of 2004, a renewed version of Joyful Noise, including George on Dobro, played at St. B’s and traveled to North Carolina to perform at a Gospel Bluegrass Picnic at the Aqueduct Conference Center in Chapel Hill. Eric Wyse, choir director at St. B’s, was producing a gospel bluegrass CD, and he suggested that Randy and the group contribute six songs to that project. The group recorded those songs in Bryan’s studio, and the 36-song compilation CD, Bluegrass Gospel Highway, was released in November 2004. Contributing to those songs are: Randy Hoover-Dempsey – vocals, mandolin; Bryan Cumming – vocals, guitar; Peter Pent – vocals, banjo; George Williamson – vocals, Dobro; Roy Goin – vocals, bass; Janelle Waggener – vocals; John and Judy Yeaworth – additional vocals. |
